Cool Facts- While the gray wolf generally gets the highlight of being the top canine in North America, the red wolf is its much, much rarer cousin. Despite being genetically different from both wolves and coyotes, the red wolf was not considered its own species until 2021. Due to habitat destruction and overhunting, the red wolf has been driven to near extinction with only 35 individuals thought to exist in the wild. Several conservation groups are working to breed red wolves and release them into the wild in the near future. Large refuge parks and protected areas have been set up in Florida with the hopes that the wolves will increase in numbers.
